The Vision
An artists’ residency, studio and cultural space
The house, alongside Gil’s bespoke Stanish and Green designed studio and extensive garden, will operate as a living House Museum and Artists’ Residency. It will support New Zealand and international practitioners of art, architecture, photography, and other creative or cultural pursuits through a residency program.
The Artists’ Residency programme aims to support a mid-career artist for a year at a time, enabling them to live rent free in Mt Eden, to create work in Gil Hanly’s studio, and to build relationships with local schools and community.
Hanly House will run an economically sustainable programme. A ‘no rent, no stipend’ artist residency model will reduce operational overheads for the project, while supporting art making in Tāmaki Makaurau.
An oasis of tranquility in an
an intensifying inner city region
The Walters Road region is planned for long term intensification, with apartments built within walking distance to the local Train Station.
With each passing decade this project will increase in value to the community, domestic and international tourists and local schools.
Gil’s exceptional sub-tropical garden would provide a desirable green space as a perfect Pocket Park for contemplation, bird sanctuary and oxygen generation in an intensely built-up zone.
A research space and museum
Gil’s architecturally designed garden studio, painted a Frida Khalo purple, is currently home to her meticulous archive of photographic material. It documents our changing social cultural landscape.
Auckland Museum is the kaitiaki of many of her original prints and her negatives. The remainder of her archive, including all her garden images, will be housed within the house and operate as a research space, by appointment.
The House Museum will open to the public on open days during city wide events like Heritage Week and Aotearoa Art Fair.
