The Hanly House Charitable Trusts is on the path, to securing the creative home and garden of iconic artists Pat and Gil Hanly, as House Museum and Artists’ Residency, for the purposes of fostering creative practice and enriching public knowledge and understanding of the arts, through public exhibitions, open studios, and schools and community outreach, as a legacy project to honour the lifes work of Pat and Gil.
The Vision
An Artists’ residency, studio and cultural space
The house and extensive garden located in Mt Eden will operate as a living House Museum and Artists’ Residency.
The Artists’ Residency programme will support a mid-career artist for a year at a time with an opportunity for an artist to live rent free, in Mt Eden, to create work in Gil Hanly’s studio, to build relationships with local schools and community.
Hanly House will run an economically sustainable programme.
A ‘No rent No Stipend’ artist residency model will reduce operational overheads for the project and support art making Auckland city.
The House Museum will open to the public on Open Days during city wide events like Heritage Week and Aotearoa Art Fair.
Gil’s Studio, painted a Frida Khalo purple, opens onto her garden. Currently home to her unique meticulous archive of photographic material depicting our changing social cultural landscape. Her archive will be rehoused within a secure room in the house to operate as a research space, by appointment. Longer term, the studio could become a bespoke museum with a bespoke studio built onsite.
“Pat and Gil’s contribution extended not only to the art world, but to gardening, social and political activism and relationships across vast and diverse sections of people. Their work has touched countless people in one way or another.
Walters Road has been a place which has inspired and been the site of innovative creative work and discourse. To have it retained as it is as a living Museum is a wonderful opportunity for future practitioners. I support this project and believe that this endeavour is significant and important in Aotearoa’s cultural and social history.”
Amber Rhodes, Pat Hanly’s daughter
An oasis of tranquility in an
an intensifying inner city region
The Walters Road region is planned for long term intensification, with apartments built within walking distance to the local Train Station.
With each passing decade this project will increase in value to the community, domestic and international tourists and local schools.
Gil’s exceptional sub-tropical garden would provide a desirable green space as a perfect Pocket Park for contemplation, bird sanctuary and oxygen generation in an intensely built-up zone.
Our first priority is to raise 1.9M to purchase 53% the property from members of the Hanly family, due to the impact of Huntingtons Disease, inherited from Pat Hanly.
That deadline is now 21 August 2026.
The Charitable Trust will have 2 years to secure the remaining 47%, those 2 years will operate as a proof of concept.
If at the end of that period, we cannot proceed, your support will be refunded, and the property sold.
Please join us, at a level that suits you, and help make the living House Museum and Artists’ Residency, a reality. With your help Hanly House will open late 2026 and continue the decades long legacy as a vibrant social hub for art and conversation and community engagement in the arts.
